Aistear is a framework that incorporates Oral Language, Socio-dramatic play, story, fantasy play, Art and other play-based learning activities. This month the children in the junior room have been working around the theme of Food. This theme runs through most subject areas including Bia in Gaeilge, Healthy eating in SPHE and science, Food from different countries in Geography, etc. The setting they chose for their Socio-dramatic play is the ‘Cloontagh Café’. They chose the menus and made some play food from clay to suit the menu they had chosen. Everybody had
a turn at being the chef, the waiter, the manager and a customer. The children are encouraged to use accurate language during the play process. They develop their own scenarios and act them out during play.
